Cabinet Unlikely to Consider Tax Amnesty Scheme, Budget Strategy Paper Today

A meeting of the federal cabinet is unlikely to consider budget strategy paper and tax amnesty scheme today (Tuesday) as a special meeting will be convened for extensive discussion on them before their approval due to their impact on the people. Sources on condition of anonymity stated as measures finalised in the budget strategy paper will have impact on people's life, therefore, extensive discussion was needed on the measure to be taken in the budget for the next fiscal year.

Similarly, tax amnesty scheme is also expected to be discussed in the special cabinet meeting. Thus, unlike some media reports, budget strategy paper and tax amnesty scheme are unlikely to be taken up in today's cabinet meeting.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, sources said, has convened cabinet meeting today (Tuesday) with 16-point agenda, which included Petroleum Division's proposal of non-applicability of additional customs duty on temporary import of major equipments for offshore exploration and drilling of wells.

Other agenda items include: (i) ratification of the decision taken by Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) in its meeting held on 18-04-2019 of the Cabinet Division; (ii) inclusion of subject "Pakistan Commissions of Inquiry Act, 2017" in Schedule-II to the Rules of Business, 1973; (iii) a resolution passed by the National Assembly for creation of Power Division & Petroleum Division as two separate ministries; (iv) and Defence and Production Division's proposal of statutory directions by the federal government as well as Finance Division's proposals for approval of foreign commercial loans and tax exemption of interest payments and Prime Minister's Kamyab Jawan Programme.

The cabinet meeting will also consider; the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention Implementation Bill, 2019, presentation to the federal cabinet to revamp the existing education system of the country, notification of members of Press Council of Pakistan, appointment of director general Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), inclusion of food items in compulsory certification mark scheme of PSQCA, approval of Draught Response Plan 2019, and appointment of judges Special Court Central-II Gujranwala, banking court Larkana-I and banking court-II Sukkur.
